Internal Reliability

Inter-rater reliability for diagnosis of a major depressive disorder has been shown to be high (kappa of 0.88), with complete agreement between interviewers for diagnosis of any depressive disorder (Lowe et al, 2004).

Validity

Lowe et al (2004) use the SCID (DSM-IV) as a criterion standard for major depression to compare the validity of the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS), the WHO (five) Well Being Index (WBI-5), and the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ), international and well-established screening questionnaires which are quickly and easily completed by the patient.
